Wild Canaries, originating from the Canary Islands – hence the name – were introduced into Europe as far back as 1748 by the Spanish. During the 18th century many different varieties were bred, particularly by the Germans in the Hartz Mountain region. As the years progressed, the birds changed in size and colour into the varieties that we know today.
Popular Canary breeds are Borders, Yorkshire, Glosters, Rollers, Norwich, Lizard and Red Factors.
Not all canaries are yellow and colours range from green, brown, variegated, yellow, right through to red and the various pastel shades of the Red Factor varieties.
